Workout Porn

Robots get buff to pulsating beats. Animating a music video.

If ever there was a video to inspire you to hit the gym and lift more weight than you’ve ever lifted before, this is it. Kraddy, Android Porn (Mochipet Godzillaporn Remix) was directed and animated by MuscleBeaver, aka Andreas Kronbeck and Tobias Knipf.

Andi was nice enough to answer a few questions.

How did you end up directing the music video? How / where did you connect with Kraddy or Mochipet (the remixer)?

Everything came through Equinox Records. DJ Scientist, the Label boss is a good friend. We have worked with them since the label was formed, creating live visuals for concerts and so on…most recently for the EQX Tour in 2007.

What was the vision / creative idea you had? Where did the hard core workout idea come from?

We wanted firstly to visualise the music, and only secondarily to explain a story.

The song consists of hectic, rhythmical movements (laughs). Porno and sex are the central themes to the song from its title “Android Porn” to the groaning in the music.

We however, only wanted to hint at them. Body building instead fitted the power and violence of the track. Muscles need to be injured before they grow. Likewise Mochipet deconstructed the original song, to build something new.

The figures needed to be as reduced as possible – for example we only used 3 colours – but they still had to have their own unique style. It was also important for people to quickly understand what the figure was doing. To get the movements synchronized with the beat was a real challenge. Timing during the fast cuts and edits was very hard.

How do you typically animate? Do you draw by hand and then scan? Do you do everything on the computer? What software tools do you use? What did you use on this project?

Yes, nearly everything in our animation work is “computer born”…

We typically do our 2D animations the way we did in the Android Porn video:

Doing all the sketching, storyboarding and footage illustration digitally with Photoshop and Illustrator in the first step. (In the A.P. case we needed only Illustrator). Then we start to compose and animate everything with After Effects.

Did Kraddy pay you? Did you do it for free / fun? Did a label pay you?

We were paid by Equinox Records, the label.
